NAVB, PHIO, IMAB, PDSB, XNCR, CDAK, LYEL, IMRX, AFMD, CGEN – Annual Mtg of the Society for Immunotherapy

November 10, 2022 @ 8:00 am - November 11, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

This event features a lot of companies, which translates into a wider audience for some of the smaller companies that wouldn’t have otherwise attracted such attention. As such, the Event traders will want to monitor the volume on some of these smaller companies to see if it clears the average daily volume in a hurry-to get some indication on whether the market is reacting favorably to their participation in the event.  However, bearing the filing of an 8k or something like that, none of these companies should be presenting information that is new to the world.  Therefor it is unlikely there will be much of an Afterglow effect in the weeks after this event.

The Runup Traders, who try to “buy the rumor, and sell the news,” when it comes to events like this are going to have something to watch too. There isn’t likely going to be a whole lot of PR before the event, but there can be 2 pieces of PR that come, one from the company and one from the event.  There could also be a sudden interest from Social Media that might drive in volume.

In this case, with the runup potential not quite as high as you can sometimes count on, and the potential for a knee-jerk reaction on the day of the event, some traders may opt to combine the runup strategy with the event strategy.  Traders in this persuasion might have a profit margin they want to reach, and if it happens during the runup period they would simply exit the trade in some manner.  If it didn’t they could hold into the event to try to catch a quick volume driven by a strong presentation.

As always, the situation is unique and the trade opportunities will depend on a lot of factors leading up to the event.  If a company tanks in the weeks before the event suddenly, that might be a more attractive target then a company that has been strong leading up to the event.  These are some of, but not nearly all, the questions short term traders need to ask themselves to develop a trading plan.
